HOW IT WORKS

I built this from the plan I use for my own firm. You start with where you stand and where you want to be a year from now. Then you walk through the pieces that get you there, one at a time, and the planner keeps each list short on purpose.

  • Where you stand. Where you are headed. Be honest about today and specific about a year from now. A real number and a real date make every step after this easier to answer.
  • Engines. Up to three. Where your work and your money come from. If you list more than three, you are probably counting the same engine twice.
  • Builds. Up to five. What you want to make this year. A book, a product, a new offer, the system you keep meaning to set up.
  • Locks. Up to six. The decisions you already made. Write them down so they stay made and you stop deciding them again every Tuesday.
  • Cuts. Up to five. What comes off your plate. This is the step most people want to skip, and it is the one that makes room for everything else.
  • Next moves. Up to eight. Your next quarter, step by step, small enough to put on the calendar this week.

At the end you get two pages with your logo, your fonts, your colors, and your name. Page one is your year. Page two is your next quarter. Print it, hang it up, or hand it to a partner.

What you leave with.

One year you can see at a glance and one quarter you can start on Monday. Come back every quarter, keep what held, cut what did not, and run it again. Nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere and it clears when you leave the page.

THE Next Step.

Your plan shows you where the year is going. The Consulting Practice Diagnostic shows you what is underneath it: the parts of your firm that are holding it up and the parts that are holding it back. Take it next, and bring what it shows you into your next moves.
